McFarlan Home, Inc. is dedicated to providing a home-like setting for the care of elderly women. It is our desire to provide our residents with the least restrictive environment possible that will maximize their social and psychological growth to become as self-sufficient as possible. Furthermore, it is our desire that their service and care needs be met in a dignified and humane manner.
McFarlan Home, a non-profit residence for women over sixty years of age, is licensed by the State of Michigan for 29 women. Each resident has her own large bedroom or suite and is completely free to come and go about her life as she pleases. Staff is available 24 hours a day if needed.
McFarlan Home began in 1925 due to the vision of Mrs. Mary McFarlan Whaley. She specified in her will that upon her death a trust would be created “for the purpose of providing and maintaining a home for elderly ladies.” This home was to be called “The McFarlan Home” in memory of her parents, Alexander and Margaret Ann McFarlan, and it was to be located in her family home at 624 E. Kearsley Street in Flint.
McFarlan Home continued at that site until 1972 when it became apparent that remodeling the old building would be too costly. A new home for fourteen residents plus additional expansion space for eight more was built adjacent to the existing home at 700 East Kearsley Street. The new building was completed in 1973. The original home was preserved and has become the Whaley Historical House. In 2002, McFarlan Home was expanded once again with a new wing, which increased occupancy to twenty-nine (29) resident women.
McFarlan Home is located near Flint’s College and Cultural Center where residents have easy access to concerts, theater, art and museum displays, and the vast reading available through the Flint Public Library. McFarlan Home is located just off the I-475 freeway, which provides easy access for family and friends. It is close to shopping, movie theaters, markets, restaurants, and medical services.
